Beginning Knitting for Kids

Crochet 201

Get help with your project. We will cover reading the pattern shorthand, understanding international crochet chart symbols, making gauge calculations, finishing techniques and many more helpful tips. Very informative follow up to our “Crochet 101” class.

Crochet Amigurumi Workshop

Bring any crochet amigurumi pattern and we will decipher it together. Instructions on "magic ring start", "jogless color changes", "slip two, chain one method" and more. Third meeting will cover sewing pieces together and face embroidery.

Crochet Edges & Trims Workshop

Add beauty and interest to any piece of clothing. Attach crocheted edges and trims to hems, necklines, collars or any surface of your hand crochet, hand knitted or “ready to wear” fabric garments. Learn how to understand multiples/repeats, determine length, hand sew edges down, add beads to trims and more. We will discuss the techniques, materials, tools and color choice tips in the first meeting, second and third meetings will be workshops for making and attaching trims to your garments.

Darning Hand Knit Socks

Save your precious socks. Learn how to reinforce weak spots with duplicate stitch and repair small holes with swiss darning in first class. Then learn to knit “attach as you go” patches for larger missing areas and the traditional weave darning in the second class.

  • Homework:

    Using light color non fuzzy worsted weight yarn and needles THREE times large than you would normally use, cast on 20 stitches knit 6 rows of garter stitch then work 20 rows of stockinette ending with 6 rows of garter stitch. We want a loose and open fabric to practice the techniques on.


Design to Fit

This course will help you evaluate what kinds of knit items look best on YOU. You'll learn how to measure yourself. We'll knit swatches to get gauge and find the ideal fabric for your project. You will design your prototype set-in sleeve sweater and calculate stitch requirements including armhole and neck shaping. Numerous knitting and finishing techniques will be discussed. Students will be encouraged to actively participate with ideas and experiences. Please understand that will not complete a sweater in four sessions!
Note: This class is intended for knitters who have already tackled their first sweater project.

Supplies: Bring a measuring tape (not ruler) to our first class. We will be taking our body measurements and a "flexible device" (metal or cloth tape) is necessary. Also bring notebook size paper for copying diagram and writing measurements.

  • Bring to class an example of ready-made and/or hand knit sweater that looks good on you and one that could fit you better.
  • Look through catalogs, magazines and knitting books for sweaters that inspire you. Bring at least 3 different pictures to class.

    Mistakes happen, whether you're brand new to knitting or not! Learn how to pick up a dropped stitch, unknitting and unpurling, "frogging" with confidence, and more. You'll learn how mistakes happen, how to fix them, and how to prevent them! (A great follow-up to Knitting 101.)

    Free Form Crochet Workshop

    Doodling with yarn, no pattern, no gauge, and no mistakes. Learn how to create continuously in all directions. Your one-of-a-kind results can turn into garments, purses, blankets or anything imaginable. Learn new attaching techniques, new stitches, new shapes, and how to work with novelty yarns. Since you only need small amounts of yarn, free-form crochet is a great way to try out a variety of “luxury”yarns and use up odds and ends. Love the work of Prudence Mapstone and Jenny Dowde?     Take your hat-making skills to the next level in just 2 hours! (A perfect follow-up to Hats 101.)

    Knitting Happily Ever After - Ergonomics for Knitters

    Ever know a knitter who hasn't said, "Just one more row"? Me neither! I'll bet they've also complained of aches and pains while knitting. In this class, you'll learn how knitting affects the "fabric that makes the fabric" - your body. You'll learn how knitting contributes to those aches and pains throughout your body, but more importantly, you'll learn how to reduce them. A little knowledge and some simple changes can keep you knitting happily and safely ever after. Students who've taken this class have said that it should be "required learning for all knitters regardless of experience level!" and, "it's as important as the knit and purl stitches!" This class is taught by a passionate knitter who is also a physical therapist.

    Machine Knit a Shibori Scarf

    Needle Felting

    Reading Japanese Pattern Basics /Workshop

    You don't read Japanese and there's this great pattern you want to make without translations! Don't despair all you need to know are the meaning of a few symbols, the logic of the method and some experience making knitted garments. It's a clear and simple system, kind of like a blueprint. Different from the "wordy" written text version of "how to make something" that we are use to. It's kind of like deciphering a secret message with a decoder ring, it's fun. Bring a project and over the last two sessions we will decode it together.

    Stitch Pattern Summer School

    Toe-Up Socks

    Learn to make socks starting at the toe. A great follow-up to our Sock it to Me class. In this class you'll flip things around and start at the toe, using the short-row toe technique. Why knit from the toe? It's great when you have a finite amount of yarn and you don't know how far it will go. You can knit until you run out! Also, why not learn? It's fun!

    Top Down Raglan Sweater

    Class Policies

    • Classes must be paid in full at the time of registration in order to hold your spot.
    • All supplies must be purchased before the class.
    • Upon signing up for a class, any changes in attendance must be made three days prior to the start of the class. If you need to cancel a class, we will issue you a store credit for the amount paid. Unfortunately, cancellations made with fewer than three days' notice result in a forfeiture of the registration fee.
    • There are no make up sessions if one of the class sessions is missed.
    • Classes have minimum enrollments; if these are not met, we reserve the right to cancel classes with 24 hours notice. Refunds for classes we cancel will be given in the method paid.
